Spring Cleaning For Your Vivariums

The sun is shinning, the wind is gently blowing, and the turn to warmer weather makes spring the perfect time to assess the needs of your vivariums!Below are the most common items that are most overlooked for replenishment. This spring take the time to reorder these products and keep your animals healthy and happy throughout the summer.

Supplements

Double check your  supplements! After 6 months (from opening) the supplements begin to break down and will eventually stop providing your animals with the nutrition they need. Not sure when you ordered supplements last? Let us know and we can look that up for you.If you're still unsure about supplements, check out this  great guide. UVB Fluorescent Lights

After about 6 months of use, the UVB output for most of these bulbs tends to wear out. If you have a critter that relies on UVB, you need to make sure that you are keeping your UVB lights fresh and beneficial! Mercury Vapor Bulbs

Mercury Vapor Bulbs need to be replaced after 12 months of use. Just like in regular UVB bulb, production begins to break down after about 12 months, and the lack of UVB can be dangerous to your animals' health! Leaf Litter

In naturalistic vivarium set-ups, the leaf litter will eventually decompose and need to be replaced. This is a great time to either dump the rest of that left-over bag in the tank, or get some more! Dart frogs love leaf litter because it provides lots of hiding places making them feel safe and secure in their environment. Substrates

Replacing substrate is not necessary in naturalistic vivarium set-ups; but in many other set-ups substrates need to be refreshed or replenished to help provide a clean environment for your pets.If you need to replace yours, Josh's Frogs has a full line of quality substrates to choose from! Cleaner

Need to sanitize artificial plants, dishes, or tanks? We have a great disinfectant concentrate that will help you clean and keep your accessories fresh and sterile! Reptisan Habitat Disinfectant and Cleaner Concentrate goes a long way because it is a concentrated liquid and must be diluted before use. New Fruit Fly Genes

If you culture your own fruit flies, over time the gene pool can become very small. This can cause your cultures to not produce as well as they always have. If you are doing everything like you always have and seem to be having trouble getting enough fruit flies to produce, this could be why. Try introducing some new fruit flies into the mix! Replenish Springtails

We recommend replenishing the springtails in your naturalistic vivarium set-up every couple of months for good measure. Over time, the frogs may snack on the springtails and diminish their population.
