About This Product

Fluval Spec III Shrimp Kit Bundle

Are you interested in keeping small ornamental shrimp? This Josh's Frogs Shrimp Kit bundles the Fluval Spec III kit with some other helpful goods to get your shrimp keeping adventure off to a good start. Like any aquarium, you'll want to put the tank together at least a couple of days before introducing any inhabitants. This kit contains:

1. Fluval Spec III Black Aquarium (2.6 gal)

This 2.6 gallon glass aquarium comes with built in 3-stage filtration, LED lighting, filter media, Nutrafin Aqua Plus Water Conditioner, and Nutrafin Cycle Biological Aquarium Supplement. It's a great start to shrimp keeping.

2. Fluval Plant and Shrimp Stratum (4.4 lbs.)

Collected from the mineral-rich foothills of Mount Aso Volcano in Japan, Fluval Stratum makes an ideal alternative substrate for planted aquariums and those featuring shrimp.

3. Thermometer

Stick this thermometer on the inside glass of the aquarium, where it can easily be monitored. Your shrimp will thrive at a temperature of 68 to 76F. The lower the temperature, the slower your shrimp will grow. Temperatures over 78F or so will result in rapid growth, but can also cause an increase in shrimp mortality. A heater should not be necessary unless your tank is an exceptionally cold room.

4. Cholla Skeleton Wood

Cholla wood is the interior skeleton of a dried Cholla cactus branch. This wood is typically slightly buoyant, but will sink on it's own after floating around in the tank for a few days. It quickly grows a layer of biofilm (bacteria) that shrimp love to feast on. The shrimp will also feed on the cholla wood itself - plan on adding a new piece after this one degrades in a year or so.

5. Indian Almond Leaves (5 pack)

Indian almond leaves provide multiple benefits to your shrimp tank. They produce tannins as they break down, which have natural antifungal and antibacterial properties, as well as condition the water. The leaves also provide more surface area for biofilm aka shrimp food to grow, as well as serving as food themselves. Indian almond leaves will initially float - you can let them sink on their own, or wedge them in the substrate/under aquarium décor to hold them in place.

6. Shrimp Food

These easy-to-feed granules are a great start to providing your shrimp with a healthy, balanced diet. Feed sparingly - only add more after no sign of food remains. In addition to this, make sure you blanch (boil) some veggies from time for time. Blanched cucumber seems very popular.

7. Josh's Frogs Dechlorinator (4 oz.)

Keep your shrimp healthy by regularly changing their water. Make tap water safe with this dechlorinator. It'll remove any chlorine or chloramines present in your tap water - these serve to keep our water safe for drinking, but can quickly be fatal to shrimp. It also neutralizes heavy metals and ammonia, as well as adding trace elements essential to shrimp development.
