Chilean sphagnum moss retains water well, aiding in maintaining a high level of humidity, making long fiber sphagnum moss an ideal choice as substrate for a humid hide in your snake or lizard cage. This moss also makes a fantastic substrate in many amphibian enclosures, and is an important substrate layer when setting up a naturalistic vivarium for poison dart frogs, tree frogs, or other tropical reptiles and amphibians. Chilean sphagnum Mmoss also has natural antifungal and antibacterial properties, lending to the creation of a cleaner environment for your pet reptile or amphibian.

Josh's Frogs Pro Tip: In our personal experience using this product, we've learned that it is more delicate than the Classic or Premium grade New Zealand sphagnum moss that is popular in the hobby. When raising dart frogs, they may become stressed from the smaller pieces of Chilean moss that break down and stick to them. Chilean sphagnum moss is a lower quality moss than New Zealand sphagnum (and a lot less expensive), and tends to contain some associated plant debris.

However using Chilean sphagnum moss in a proper vivarium setup has proven much more successful! This is due in part to the leaf litter layer creating a barrier between the moss and frogs, and also regular misting schedules allowing the animals a brief shower to rinse off!

Long fiber sphagnum moss is sometimes called 'Orchid Moss' due to it's ability to grow orchids and other epiphytic plants. Many species of carnivorous plants thrive in Chilean Sphagnum Moss.
