Species Name: Actiniopteris australis

Common Name: Eyelash Fern

Defining Characteristics:

  • This distinctive plant displays unique fronds that mimic the look of human eye-lashes
  • Each frond is extremely unique and ranges from a vibrant lime color to a slightly darker green
  • A great added flair for higher humidity vivariums that stays smaller than other ferns
  • The Eyelash Fern grows and spreads with rhizomes, making it an easy to split plant

Temperature Requirement (°F): 65-80

Humidity: This unique fern can adapt to lower humidity around 40-60% but prefers to be around 70% or more

Watering Frequency: Slightly more difficult watering needs. It requires fairly consistently wet soil but not over-saturated, as this can cause root rot very easily with this plant.

Lighting: Partial shade

Soil Type: This fern needs a loose substrate that contains peat moss or sphagnum for moisture retention, and perlite or sand for good drainage.

Growth Rate: Very slow 

Height at Maturity: Maxes out at 6 inches tall

Origin: Endemic to Réunion, Mauritius but found in tropical regions such as Madagascar, India, Nepal, Arabia, Burma, Sri Lanka, Australia, and Iran.

Regional Locality: Found throughout the forest growing in between rocks and porous crevices
