About This Product

SPECIAL NOTE: USPS forbids shipping venomous spiders or scorpions in the mail.

Because of this, we ship these animals FedEx priority overnight for a flat fee of $39.99.

NamePterinopelma sazimai: Brazilian blue tarantula,  the genus name translates to pterino—"wing"; and -pelma—"sole of foot". The specific epithet sazimai is the Latinized name of Dr. Ivan Sazima who first collected the species. The common name references the spider’s national origin and iridescent blue hairs.

Recommended Enclosure Size: The tarantula should be kept in a terrarium with a width 3 to 4 times its legs pan. Include enough substrate for the spider to burrow in. Brazilian blues inhabit rocky areas in the wild, so some rocks may be included as well. However, be careful that the rocks are not situated in a way that they'd able to collapse on the tarantula when it begins to burrow.

Temperature (°F): 70-75 degrees during the day, and 60-65 at night.

Humidity: 60-70%

Size: At the time of sale, these spiders will be at least 1/2 inch. As adults, they can reach up to 6 inches.

We measure our tarantulas using diagonal leg span.

Age: Lifespan is uncertain. Little reliable information is available. One source states that the female is able to live for up to 12 years. Males reach maturity in 2 years. Females may do so in 3.

Feeding: Drosophila melanogaster or D. hydei. As it grows, so should its prey. Prey items should be no larger than the size of the spider’s abdomen. Spiderlings can be fed as frequently as they are willing to eat but should be fed at least twice a week otherwise.

Remove uneaten prey items: these may endanger the spider during molting.

Sexing: To identify a male or female before it has reached sexual maturity you will need to examine its cast skin which in females will have a folded area in the abdominal region which will eventually connect to her spermatheca when she is mature.

Due to their age, Brazilian blue tarantulas sold by Josh's Frogs are sold as unsexed animals.

Color/Pattern: A handsome iridescent blue tarantula with reddish-orange hairs on its abdomen.

Social Behavior: The Brazilian Blue Tarantula is not a social species, any attempts to cohabitate will likely result in cannibalism.

Breeding: Spiders for breeding purposes should remain supervised when together and should only be attempted well fed. Mature males can be put in the enclosure of a mature female for courtship/mating. Remove male promptly after insertion is observed, or immediately if female is less than receptive. This is best done around a month after the female molts, as a freshly molted female is less likely to molt out of a pairing.

Natural Range: Chapada Diamantina National Park in Bahia, Brazil.

History in the Hobby: The Brazilian Blue tarantula is now endangered in its native range, in part thanks to overcollection for the pet trade.

Wonderful Christmas Gift

I picked up one of these slings for a friend of mine wanting to join the hobby. I've purchased from numerous exceptional dealers and Josh's Frogs has been added to the list of places I will absolutely be purchasing from again. The sling is vigorous and healthy. It ran under my sleeve while being transferred to its new enclosure, can't ask for a better attitude than that after being in a little vial all night. Packaging was superb, including a heat pack that wasn't directly on the sling, and extremely safe for the cutie. Pricing on this T is great and the overnight shipping cost was unbeatable. Very happy with my new arrival.
