Recommended Terrarium Size: A 20 gallon or 18x18x18 terrarium is suitable for 1 adult, but there's nothing wrong with providing extra space. A 29 gallon tank or 18x18x24 will comfortably house 2 adults. Be careful when cohabbing crested geckos, especially of the opposite sex. Coco Fiber or a mix of coco fiber and peat moss works well as a substrate, as well as our BioBedding Tropical substrate. Provide branches, standing cork, or tall or hanging plants to make your arboreal geckos feel at home.

Temperature: Keep Crested Geckos at 74-78F. They cannot tolerate temperatures at or above 85F. Do not let your Crested Geckos get excessively warm, as high temps can quickly be lethal.

Humidity: Crested Geckos like it humid. Provide a water bowl and mist frequently enough to maintain humidity at about 60-70%. Substrate can be allowed to just dry out between mistings, but it should not be bone dry or soaking wet.

Size: Adult Crested Geckos measure up to about 7-9 inches. At hatching, they measure approximately 1-2 inches. Juveniles sold by Josh's Frogs will measure approximately 4-5 inches.

Age: Crested Geckos can live up to 15-20 years with proper care. All Crested Geckos sold by Josh's Frogs will be 2+ months old at the time of sale.

Feeding: Crested Geckos are omnivores. They thrive on a staple diet of fruit mixes and may also be offered crickets or dubia roaches. Waxworms, black soldier fly larvae, and butterworms make a great occasional treat. All feeder insects should be dusted with a vitamin/mineral supplement and fed in an escape proof bowl.

Sexing: Sexing Crested Geckos is fairly easy - males have visible bulges at the base of their tail. Animals are typically sexable by 5-6 months of age. Juveniles sold by Josh's Frogs are not sexed.

Color/Pattern: Crested Geckos come in a variety of colors and patterns. They range from brown, cream, and black to reds, oranges, and whites. Some Crested Geckos are patternless, while others are decorated with spots or stripes.

Social Behavior: Crested Geckos are fine housed alone. As juveniles, they can be housed in groups, but this may result in the occasional geckos losing its tail (while the tail will not grow back, they will thrive just as well without it). Adults can be housed in groups, but no more than one male should be housed per enclosure.

Breeding: Breeding mature Crested Geckos is easy. Breeding season runs from December to August. Females will lay 2 eggs every 30-45 days during this period. Males may be removed to give the females a break.

Natural Range: Crested Geckos are native to New Caledonia.

History in the Hobby: Crested Geckos were thought to be extinct in the wild until they were rediscovered in 1994. Once established in captivity, they thrived and became very popular. While no longer available for export, these hardy geckos are now widely available through captive breeding.
