Sponge may be moistened with purified water to maintain humidity level in a small enclosure. Sponges also contain nutrients such as Chitin and bits of natural shells that crabs will eat and are beneficial for their exoskeleton.

These should not be placed in the water dishes unless they are sanitized everyday as they will collect harmful bacteria. If you are concerned your hermit crab may drown in a larger water dish, choose hard, non-porous items as a ramp.
