 Defining Characteristics:

  • Recently this species underwent a revision that separated it into 13 distinct species. As such, it is highly theorized that the specimens available in the hobby have been hybridized, therefore we are selling these babies as "Hobby" form
  • A beautiful dwarf species that makes eye catching web work, these would make a great desk pet due to their small stature and penchant for decorating
  • Though they come in a small package, this species grows fast and has an incredible feeding response, it won't take long for these little cuties to get to their adult size!

Name: Davus pentaloris is commonly called the Guatemalan Tiger Rump Tarantula. It is indigenous to Guatemala and parts of Mexico and has pretty distinct orange and black striped patterning on the abdomen.

Recommended Enclosure Size & Setup: They like to make burrows so as babies, a container large enough to give at least 1.5-2 inches of substrate is preferred. Adults need closer to 4-6 inches of substrate. For floor space, 3-4 times the spider’s diagonal leg span for both length and width is appropriate. Just make sure that the space above the substrate does not exceed 2 times the spider’s diagonal leg span to prevent injury from a fall. ABG mixcoco cradle, and Dig-It are all good substrate options for this species, but our Pet Bug Team prefers ABG all the way!

Want to spice up your enclosure with live plants? Our experts have curated kits of easy-to-care-for and SAFE plants for your tarantula. Check them out here!

Temperature (°F): A good comfortable range for them is 75-80 degrees. Temperatures consistently below 65 or above 90° should be avoided for the longevity of the spider.

thermometer is recommended to keep an eye on temperatures in the enclosure.

Humidity: 75%-80%, This can be achieved by keeping the substrate uniformly dampened. The enclosure sides and decor should be spritzed lightly around 2-3 times a week to provide your spiderling droplets to drink from, but do not spray your spider directly.

A reliable hygrometer is strongly recommended to monitor humidity within the enclosure.

Size: Young D. pentaloris sold from Josh’s Frogs are approximately 3/4 inch diagonal leg span. Though this species is considered a dwarf species, they get larger than most dwarf species. Females top out at around a 4 inch diagonal leg span, with males usually maturing between 2.5-3 inches.

Age: These slings are at least 2 months at time of sale. Females live an average of 10-12 years, with males averaging about 1/3 of that life span.

Feeding: At time of sale, specimens are eating hydei fruit flies. Babies should be fed every 4-7 days and as they age into adults, feeding should be spread to every 7-10 days.

We recommend that the prey items not be much longer than the tarantula's “head” is wide. Larvae are an exception—our larvae are harmless. Since they are very high in fat, they're not the best staple diet, however they make a great weight gain supplement.

Remove uneaten prey items after 24 hours, these may stress your animal out or endanger the spider during molting. Never attempt to feed a freshly molted tarantula less than a week after their molt to prevent injury to the spider. Depending on its age, the hardening process could take anywhere from 48 hours all the way up to a week.

Sexing: Due to their age, D. pentaloris sold by Josh's Frogs are unsexed. As they approach maturity, specimens may be sexed using a molt; due to the small nature of this spider, molt sexing may require a magnifying glass. Females will have spermatheca and a uterus externus between the top set of book lungs that will catch and "flap" if a pin is run down the inside of the abdomen. Males will have a much more plain slit that does not budge with attempts to manipulate it.

Coloration/Patterning: This species exhibits dull coloration pretty early on. Babies are dark gray/black with light carapaces and orange patterning on the abdomen. As adults, this changes to a velvety black color with bright, almost metallic copper carapaces and abdominal patterning, with some slightly duller copper striping on the legs.

Social Behavior: D. pentaloris are not social creatures, any attempts to cohabitate will likely result in cannibalism.

Natural Range: Most of Guatemala and Southern Mexico
