Name: Avicularia avicularia: Guyana pink toe tarantula, the scientific name is from the Latin “avicula” meaning “little bird”, a reference to the size of the spiders and their supposed ability to prey on small birds. The common name references the pink toes they possess as adults.
Recommended Enclosure Size: (For adults) Ideal size: 12”x12”x18”, minimum size: 8”x8”x12”. Terrarium should be side opening as this genus tend to build their nests toward the top of the terrarium, but should not be so large that the spider is difficult to find.
Temperature: 60-80°F.
Humidity: 70-80%. Terrarium should be misted every two to three days.
Size: At least ~¾”. Grows up to 5” in females, 3.5” in males.
Age: Lives up to 10 years in females, 4 years in males. Reach maturity in 2-3 years.
Feeding: Drosophila melanogaster or D. hydei. As it grows, so should its prey. Prey items should be no larger than the size of the spider’s abdomen.
Sexing: Adult males are smaller than females. To identify a male or female before it has reached sexual maturity you will need to examine a cast skin. In females this will have a folded area in the abdominal region which will connect to her spermatheca when she is mature. Due to their age, Guyana pink toe tarantulas sold by Josh's Frogs are sold as unsexed animals.
Color/Pattern: As a spiderling the pink toe has black toes and pink legs. As it ages however, the spider’s coloration reverses and its legs turn to black and its toes to pink. In addition to the foundational black coloration, the hairs of the spider’s body have a purplish hue.
Social Behavior: The pink toe tarantula can be successfully kept in groups. If done however, be aware that there is still a risk of cannibalism that exists, especially if the spiders are not adequately fed.
Breeding: When breeding pink toes, it is best to plan for one month after the female molts. If a molt follows the pairing before eggs can be laid, the reproductive material will be discarded in the process. The female should also be well fed prior to the paring as the females enjoy the taste of their suitors and feeding may disincline them to eat their mate. Supervise the terrarium and be ready to save the male should the situation get hairy following mating. If successful the female will construct an egg sac which should be removed four weeks after for incubation.
Natural Range: Found throughout the Carribean, Southern Central, and Northern South America.

This was my first ever tarantula and I could not be happier with the overall experience of receiving my animal. It arrived active and healthy and is still doing great. Molted the 3rd day I had her and is very active and fun to watch.
