About This Product

Defining Characteristics:

  • Great Beginner Frog
  • Light to dark grey mottling with Bright yellow on the underbelly and legs
  • Somewhat Shy
  • 1.5”-2”
  • Low Short Trill
  • Good in Groups

Name: Dendropsophus marmoratus aka Hyla marmorata. Named for its resemblence to bird droppings, the South American Bird Poop Frog is also known as the Marbled Tree Frog. Scientifically, they were known as Hyla marmorata until recently.

Recommended Vivarium Size: These frogs should be kept in at least an 18x18x18 front opening tank or 20 gallon enclosure, but would appreciate more vertical space. Newly morphed froglets can be kept temporarily in 12x12x18 front opening tanks or a 10 gallon. Keeping these frogs bioactively can be accomplished using Josh's Frogs' Biobedding with a healthy layer of leaf litter and sphagnum moss. Vivariums should be heavily planted with plants with leaves for perching and hiding in. Branches should also be supplied to increase overall climbing surfaces for the frogs. A dish of clean water should also be provided for the frogs to soak in.

Temperature: Between 72° and 78° degrees. In general, room temperatures are going to be fine. Do not let your Bird Poop frogs get over 85F.

Humidity: 50-70% A large water bowl and frequent misting will help you keep the humidity up. In some situations, it may be necessary to block part of the screen top of the enclosure to increase humidity.

Size: Bird Poop frogs are sexually dimorphic like many other frogs where the females are larger than the males. Males hover around the 1.5” range and females can reach almost 2”. When these frogs are sold they will be at least 5/8" and eating 1/4" crickets

Age:  Bird Poop frogs can live for 5-8 years but may live longer in captivity with ideal care. At the time of sale, bird poop frogs will be at least 6 weeks old.

Feeding:  Bird Poop frogs can be fed crickets of varying sizes their whole lives up to 1/4” for adults. At time of sale, baby Bird Poop frogs will be eating 1/4" crickets.

Sexing: Female South American Bird Poop Frogs are visually more rotund than males. Males are a bit smaller, and mature males will have wrinkles on their throat, as it becomes stretched out from calling. If you can catch them calling, this is a sure fire way to tell males from females.

Color/Pattern: Bird Poop frogs are a marbled light to dark grey occasionally being brown. Their bellies are mostly light grey to white with black spots and yellow or orange near their vents and legs.

Social Behavior:  These frogs will compete for mates but will live fairly peacefully with other  Bird Poop frogs. These frogs do great in groups.

Breeding: Male Bird Poop frogs will call to attract females during the rainy season and, after amplexus, females will deposit eggs on the surface of the water. In captivity, this can be simulated using a rain chamber. Females can lay up to 1,000 eggs at a time, which will hatch over the course of a few days. Tadpoles develop over the course of about 2 months and can take up to 3 to 4 for the whole clutch to metamorphose.

Tadpoles: Tadpoles should be kept in an aquarium with tannin rich water that has been cycled. Tadpoles will readily eat a variety of fish food and Josh’s frogs Tree frog tadpole food. Sponge filters should be placed in the tank and no more than 50% of the water replaced during water changes.

Natural Range: This species occurs in southern Venezuela, the Guianas, and the Amazon basin in Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. (IUCN red list)

Can't Get Enough Of These Guys!

Loved my first BP babies so much I had to buy two more... and then two more! My happy little flock (herd? pack?) are always chilling together on leaves asleep during the day but love to wake up after a light misting and hunt for some crickets! Adorable to watch at night with their skinny legs and fat bellies these guys are constantly cruising around, splashing in the water, and even waking upside-down across the screen top of their tank! Perhaps one of my favorite treefrogs, although they are decidedly more quiet than most (hoping they become more vocal this spring.)

Healthy and fun to look for

My bp frog came in perfect condition and is very alert. I love to check on him at night because he's always climbing the walls, branches, and leaves or taking a soak in his water bowl. It's also fun to hunt for him during the day to see where he decided was a good napping spot. For the moment he's enjoying being on the ground soaking in the dirt, so be sure to check there if you get one of these guys

Love these frogs

Had my first 2 from an expo, had to get more, they were well shipped but 1 of them had wedged itself into an awkward position, and I let Josh's frogs know, and they were concerned and kept in touch while it adapted, it's doing very well, thanks for these amazing new friends
