About This Product

Josh's Frogs is excited to be able to offer our customers this RARE and beautiful Marcgravia.

Marcgravia (also known as Shingle vine and Shingle plant) is a member of the family Marcgraviaceae. It's a fast growing flowering vine native to Central and South America. Marcgravia sp. ‘Copper’ is found in moist, humid conditions of the rainforest climbing high on trees. Its flat-leaved vines grab hold of tree trunks with aerial roots. Once it climbs high enough, it sends out lateral branches and blooms with pendulous flower clusters which are pollinated by birds and bats.

This particular form of Marcgravia has green leaves that turn light to dark shades of brown. The leaves also have a light green edging which is a beautiful contrast to the dark color. The young leaves are more narrow and as the leaves age, they take on a more rounded appearance. The midrib and veins are not pronounced at all and older leaves retain the same color throughout. This is a rare and hard to find form of Marcgravia.

Container Gardens/Terrariums/Houseplants:

Marcgravia love humidity and therefore makes it a great plant for the humid environment of a container garden or terrarium. Being a fast growing vine, it will need to be pruned regularly to remain contained. This plant is not recommended as a houseplant in an open air pot.

Vivariums/Animal Terrariums:

Marcgravia is a great shingler plant - the leaves will overlap each other, and make for a spectacular display in the vivarium. Too small to support frogs, this plant makes a great feature or accent, especially when allowed to grow up the background or hardscape of a vivarium. Plant Marcgravia in the soil at the base of something it can climb up, provide it with moderate to high light, and watch it take off!

This Marcgravia plant has been in a naturalistic vivaria set up with dart frogs and has had time to grow in for 3-4 months. This picture is a representation of the growth habit of Marcgravia in general.

As good practice, Josh's Frogs recommends washing all plants thoroughly removing as much soil as possible with dechlorinated water before placing them in their final home. Live plants may vary in color, size and appearance. Plants from Josh’s Frogs are specifically grown to be safe for use with animals. Live plants may vary in color, size and appearance.

Worth the wait

I had my eye on this shingle plant for a long time. I finally jumped on it and I can't be happier. It arrived with two cuttings which I kept in a humid grow out bin. Soon it started shooting out runners and now I've got it climbing up backgrounds in multiple vivariums. The veining on this plant truly makes it stand out.
