A few days ago I had no idea how to grow carnivorous plants. But when I saw josh's frogs offered some, I bought them immediately. Then I started thinking... "I have no idea what these guys need!" Thankfully my mother in law had noticed my love for ...weird plants ( I have literally hundreds of caudiciforms, succulents, and amorphophallus, in addition to other little oddballs) so she had gotten me "The Savage Garden" signed book a few Christmases ago, (I highly recommend this book) so I picked that up and read all about their care. On one hand I feel like "now I know everything" and on the other I am panicking that I won't do a good job despite my newfound knowledge that the wonderful book has given me. Their care is different than the average houseplant, but honestly totally manageable if you just do the research. The first thing I did was buy a water distiller. They have gotten decently affordable and unless you are collecting rainwater or have a RO system, it seems this is the best option for a few plants. they need pure water with as few minerals and salts and chemicals as possible, and the savage garden does a wonderful job of breaking down what each plant needs, as far as light, container, dormancy, soil, etc etc. I bought 3 carnivorous plants from joshes frogs and I have my nepenthes 'gaya' in an empty terrarium, lit with grow lights and lifted so the pot doesn't sit in water, my VFT 'dente' outside in the sun in a tray of water which the potted plant sits in (dormancy is going to be a trick here in NH, if I can't find a cool windowsill I am going to have to get creative haha) and the sarracenia 'Judith Hindle" is right next to the VFT. ALL the plants arrived super healthy, bigger than expected and just stunning colors.(the nep arrived in reds and greens, the vft and sar are still mostly green but will redden as well) In my recent research I have found that if you are new to carnivorous plants, the types offered by josh's frogs are optimal. (though I would love to see some sundews and butterworts offered in the future if you plan on expanding the carnivorous plant section :) ) Judith Hindle is often referred to as "if you can only have one sarracenia this is it" the nep gaya is in just about every "recommended beginner" plant section in any website you visit. the VFT dente isn't my favorite vft (because I always like big and best lol) but for sure if I had bought a b-52 first, my next obvious choice to add to the collection would have been 'dente' so it is still great choice. The VFT caught a black soldier fly this morning, the sarracenia has caught two houseflies in one trap- we even got to see one of them get caught- so satisfying! especially since that particular fly had been bugging me all morning. long story short, if you always wanted carnivorous plants, but were afraid of killing them- pick up a copy of The Savage Garden, then buy a few plants from Josh's frogs- you won't be disappointed!
