About This Product

 Defining Characteristics:

  • Very small gecko
  • Nocturnal
  • Active hunters
  • Easy to keep and breed
  • Small size = less expensive setup

Name: Paroedura androyensis. Known as the pygmy panther gecko for its small size. Also known as Grandidier’s ground gecko.

Recommended Enclosure Size: Due to their small size, a pair or trio of pygmy panther geckos can be kept in an 8x8x8 or 8x8x12 glass enclosure. A group of 4-5 animals can be kept in a 12x12x12 enclosure. A male can be housed with multiple females, but males should never be housed together. Coco fiber-based substrates work best for this species and should be kept moist (but not wet); providing a couple of dry spots are imperative for actively breeding females to deposit eggs. These geckos are terrestrial but enjoy climbing as well. Cork bark works especially well for this species, providing hides with its crevices as well as climbing material. Leaf litter can also provide numerous hiding places and a natural touch, as they often inhabit the leaf litter layer in the wild.

Temperature: Keep pygmy panther geckos between 75-80 F. If warmer stable temperatures are maintained, a basking spot is not necessary. If provided, the basking spot should not exceed 85 F and maintained with an undertank heater or basking bulb. Temperature should be monitored with a digital thermometer, and the basking spot can be checked with an infrared thermometer or temperature gun. Night temperatures should not fall below 70 F. UV light is not required.

Humidity: Keep pygmy panther geckos at 55-65% ambient humidity (up to 70%). Live plants can be added to help create humid microclimates. Ambient humidity should be monitored with a digital hygrometer. These geckos should be lightly misted daily or every other day to provide dew on enclosure walls and cage items from which they can drink, but enough ventilation should be provided to allow the enclosure to dry out after a few hours. A shallow water dish can be provided but is not necessary with regular misting.

Size: Pygmy panther geckos only reach around 2.7-2.8 inches from head to tail as adults!

Age: Pygmy panther geckos are at least 2 months old when sold by Josh’s Frogs, at which time they are well established. It is estimated that these geckos live for 5-6 years in captivity.

Feeding: Juvenile pygmy panther geckos sold by Josh’s Frogs are fed ⅛-inch cricketsandmelanogaster fruit flies. Adults should be fed a staple of  ⅛-inch crickets or ¼-inch crickets, but can also be offered black soldier fly larvae, melanogaster and hydei fruit flies, dwarf white isopods, and bean beetles. All feeder insects should be gutloaded and dusted with vitamin/mineral supplements, and can be offered in a food dish.

Sexing: Pygmy panther geckos are easily sexed as males exhibit a conspicuous bulge at the base of the tail.

Color/Pattern: Aside from their cream colored belly, these geckos exhibit shades of brown with large spots on their back.

Social Behavior: Females can be housed together. Males can be grouped with multiple females, but no more than one male should be in an enclosure.

Breeding: These geckos are prolific breeders and will breed year round. Females expend a lot of energy while breeding, and active breeders must be fed plenty to compensate. Tail thickness is a good indicator of a breeding female's health, and females exhibiting a thin tail should be removed immediately and allowed to recuperate. Providing a dish of calcium is essential for the long term success of these breeders. Females will lay two eggs every 3-4 weeks buried in the substrate. Drier spots in the substrate must be provided; kept on substrate that is completely moist or wet, females may become eggbound while holding onto eggs that they cannot deposit.

Natural Range: Pygmy panther geckos are found in south and east Madagascar, where they live in deciduous forests among leaf litter and the lower trunks of trees.

History in the Hobby: Paroedura androyensis are rarely offered, and we’re very excited to have the opportunity to breed them and make captive bred pygmy panther geckos more accessible in the hobby!

Awesome service, awesome animales!

I ordered three Pygmy Panther Geckos from Josh's Frogs. They arrived safe and sound and in great condition! Within a couple of hours, one was already eating. They are very tiny, so prepare for that. They are just adorable, and the service provided and care given to these little guys is so evident. I can't recommend Josh' Frog's enough!
