About This Product

Defining Characteristics:

  • Unusually bold micro gecko
  • Diurnal
  • Love to climb
  • Brilliantly striped males
  • Easy to keep
  • Small size = less expensive setup

Name: Gonatodes vittatus. Known as Wiegmann’s Striped Gecko, these micro geckos have a line down the length of their back which is much more conspicuous and bright in males. Compared to their shy Gonatodes cousins, these micro geckos are as bold as the stripes on their back!

Recommended Enclosure Size & Setup: Adults should be kept alone or in pairs in a 12x12x12 or 12x12x18 enclosure. Because this species does not grow very large, upgrading adults to a larger enclosure is usually unnecessary.

Coco fiber-based substrates or sand-soil mixtures work well. A bioactive substrate can be made with BioBedding Tropical, springtails, and isopods. Keep substrate slightly moist. A layer of leaf litter should be added on top of the substrate.

Hides should be provided; cork bark and similar items work well. Climbing materials like rocks, driftwood, cork bark, manzanita branches, and other rough surfaces should be provided. Live plants are also a welcome addition.

Temperature (°F) & Lighting: Keep Wiegmann’s Striped Geckos between 75-80 °F. An undertank heater or basking bulb can be used to provide a basking spot of 85-90 degrees, but is not necessary with stable temperatures. Temperature should be monitored with a digital thermometer, and basking spot can be checked with an infrared thermometer or temperature gun. Night temperatures should not fall below 68 F.

UV lighting is strongly recommended. Not only will they synthesize D3 from ambient UVB radiation and incidental exposure, but they will also use the UVA wavelengths visible to all reptiles to properly inform basking behavior and circadian rhythm. Great UV options for this species are the Arcadia Shade Dweller ProT5 UVB Kit or an Arcadia D3 6% UVB T8 bulb.

Humidity: Weigmann’s Striped Geckos enjoy a drier setup than tropical geckos and should be kept between 50-60% humidity. Adding plants will provide humid microclimates in the enclosure. Ambient humidity should be monitored with a digital hygrometer. Striped geckos should be lightly misted daily or every other day provide dew on enclosure walls and cage items from which they can drink, but enough ventilation should be provided to allow the enclosure to dry out after several hours. A shallow water dish can be provided but is not necessary with regular misting.

Size: Hatching out at only a little over an inch, Wiegmann’s Striped Geckos will only reach a little over 3 inches as adults!

Age: Wiegmann’s Striped Geckos are at least 4 weeks old when sold by Josh’s Frogs, at which time they are well established. It is estimated that these geckos live for 10-20 years in captivity.

Feeding: Wiegmann’s Striped Geckos sold by Josh’s Frogs are fed pinhead crickets and ⅛-inch crickets. These juveniles can also be occasionally offered extra small black soldier fly larvae, melanogaster fruit flies, and springtails. Adults should be fed a staple of  ⅛-inch crickets, but can also be offered black soldier fly larvae, melanogaster and hydei fruit flies, dwarf white isopods, and bean beetles. All feeder insects should be gutloaded and dusted with vitamin/mineral supplements, and can be offered in a food dish.

Sexing: Striped geckos are sexually dimorphic and can be visually sexed. Once reaching around three months of age, males begin to lose their pattern and obtain a yellow head, gray body, and conspicuous white line down the length of their entire body. Females retain their earthy colors and spotted pattern and only developed a muted white line down their body.

Color/Pattern: Juveniles are gray and brown with light beige spots. Females retain their colors but develop brown and gray spots and a muted white line down their body. Males have yellow heads, gray, patternless bodies, and a very bright white line down the length of their body.

Social Behavior: This species is best kept alone or as a pair. Males are territorial, and females may fight with other females.

Breeding: A light brumation period in the winter or longer days in the summer will help incite breeding. Females lay single eggs every 3 weeks in a secure area, and will often make use of strategically placed egg-laying tubes. Eggs hatch within 65-110 days.

Natural Range: Wiegmann’s Striped Geckos inhabit a large range of habitats. They are found in semi-arid regions like Aruba and Curacao, as well as more humid areas like Trinidad, Venezuela, and Tobago.

History in the Hobby: Despite being not too difficult to keep and breed, captive bred individuals are not often readily available. We’re excited to make this micro gecko more popular and available!

Awesome microgeckos!

After acquiring a male elsewhere, I decided to pair him up with a female and begin a personal breeding project. I've been extremely satisfied with the customer service from Josh's frogs crew, and the gecko arrived in perfect condition. Almost a year later, they have hatchlings and juveniles running around! They're very fun to watch especially at feeding time. Very ravenous feeding response who take fruit flies, crickets, black soldierfly larvae (which are very useful in conditioning the adults for breeding) and bean beetles to a lesser extent as a treat. Overall, a very underrated and very easy species especially in a bioactive setup.

Perfect, adorable, very bold!

An absolutely adorable little gecko who, even on the same day as arrival, was out and about and observing the world! Perfect shipping and a very happy little baby!

Cool microgecko

Gonatodes vittatus are very vibrant and inquisitive about their environment. I actually didn't get mine from Josh's but mine settled down a bit and began exploring the vivarium. Its usually visible basking and seems very personable! The more hiding spots you offer them, the safer they'll feel and the more bold they'll become.

Very excited for new addition
