About This Product

Defining Characteristics:

  • Nocturnal
  • Medium terrestrial gecko
  • Beautiful banding
  • Easy to keep and breed
  • Can be handled

Name: Coleonyx elegans. Its straightforward common name, the Yucatan banded gecko, refers to its range and patterning. It is a common inhabitant of forested and open habitats throughout the Yucatan peninsula.

Recommended Enclosure Size & Setup: An 18x18x12 enclosure can hold a lone adult. Yucatan Banded Geckos have a tendency to be feistier with potential cage mates than other coleonyx species; sometimes they can be kept in pairs or trios, but must be closely monitored and kept separately if fighting is observed, or if an animal becomes sick/skinny.

Sand mixed with peat moss or coco fiber works well as a substrate. Dig-It also works great. Keep the substrate slightly moist or drier. A subtropical bioactive setup is strongly recommended. Numerous hides should be provided; slate, cork flats, live oak, or even everyday items like overturned planter saucers work well. Low climbing materials like rocks, driftwood, cholla wood, cork bark, manzanita branches, and other rough surfaces can be added, but should be supported by the bottom of the enclosure instead of the substrate, given banded geckos are avid burrowers.

Succulents and arid plants can also be added.

Temperature (°F): Keep Yucatan Banded Geckos between 74-78 degrees. Provide a basking spot of around 85-90 degrees maintained with an overhead basking bulb. Temperature should be monitored with a digital thermometer, and the basking spot can be checked with an infrared thermometer or temperature gun. Night temperatures should not fall below 65 degrees.

UV lighting is strongly recommended. Not only will they synthesize D3 from ambient UVB radiation and incidental exposure, but they will also use the UVA wavelengths visible to all reptiles to properly inform basking behavior and circadian rhythm. UV lighting should be focused on their basking site and feature Ferguson zone 1 levels of UV radiation. Animals should also be provided opportunities to escape from UV exposure throughout the rest of their enclosure.

Humidity: Keep Yucatan Banded Geckos at around 60% humidity. Ambient humidity should be monitored with a digital hygrometer. It is essential to provide this species access to very humid microclimates; a humid hide works well, but a burrowing substrate that dries out on top while holding moisture underneath works even better. These banded geckos should be misted daily or every other day to rehydrate the substrate and provide dew on enclosure walls and cage items from which they can drink, but enough ventilation should be provided to allow the surface of the substrate to dry out after a few hours. A shallow water dish can be provided but is not necessary with regular misting.

Size: Yucatan Banded Gecko hatchlings are around 1-1.5 inches. Geckos bred and raised by Josh's Frogs are about 3 inches at the time of sale. Adults will reach about 5-7 inches from head to tail. This species has a lean build.

Age: Yucatan Banded Geckos are at least 6 weeks old when sold by Josh’s Frogs, at which time they are well established. It is estimated that these geckos live for 10-20 years in captivity.

Feeding: Yucatan Banded Geckos can handle feeder crickets within 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch, with juveniles favoring smaller prey items, and slowly favoring larger prey items as they grow. Juveniles can also occasionally be offered extra small black soldier fly larvae, melanogaster fruit flies and bean beetles. Adults can also occasionally be offered black soldier fly larvae, waxworms, and small mealworms.

All feeder insects should be gut loaded and dusted with vitamin/mineral supplements; we recommend Repashy Calcium Plus LoD when provided proper UV lighting, but if not, Repashy Calcium Plus should be provided to account for the lack of natural vitamin D3 generation

Sexing: Adult male Yucatan Banded Geckos exhibit a bulge at the base of their tail.

Color/Pattern: As juveniles, Yucatan Banded Geckos are a deep russet red with black and beige banding. As they age, the red gradually fades away, eventually featuring highly contrasting beige and mahogany banding. There is a great deal of pattern variation; banding is generally rather irregular, and some individuals even feature a stripe down their spine.

Social Behavior: Juveniles can be housed together with no issues, but adults (even males and females) should be housed separately except for a short period when attempting to breed this species.

Breeding: A light brumation period in the winter or longer days in the summer will help incite breeding. Pair a male and female together for 1-2 weeks, and then separate again. Females lay pairs of eggs about once every 30-40 days. Eggs will often be laid in a humid hide if one is provided. Eggs should be carefully removed and incubated.

Natural Range: These banded geckos occur in Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize.

History in the Hobby: Despite being easy to keep and breed, captive bred Yucatan Banded Geckos are not very common. We’re excited to make this banded gecko more popular and available!
