I used to to build a waterfall, and it does great job keeping my substrate separated. I highly recommend siliconing it in place so the substrate doesn't push it out of place.

Pond wall is a super easy to use product that is pretty versatile. It holds back the substrate, wile allowing for water to flow to and from the drainage layer, this is especially nice with a pump, because it keeps the water circulating and not stagnating!
